STMicroelectronics introduces new line of EV microcontrollers

Semiconductor provider STMicroelectronics has introduced a new line of microcontrollers (MCUs). The Stellar E line is designed for EVs as well as domain and zonal electronic architectures.

The company says that, compared to other MCUs that depend on additional chips to manage the control of silicon carbide power modules, Stellar E MCUs manage control-loop processing on one chip. According to STMicroelectronics, this simplifies the design, reduces costs and eases compliance with safety and security standards.

The ISO 26262 ASIL-D and HSM-compliant Stellar E model line is also capable of controlling multiple power converters.

The Steller E model line will begin with the Stellar SR5E1. Samples are being provided to customers, and the company says a full production run is slated to begin in 2023.

“With the new Stellar E devices, this platform now enables a new value chain for EVs. Sensing the environment, controlling vehicle dynamics, enhancing power-conversion efficiency and safely managing high-current power stages are effectively handled in a single component. The ability to update software securely over the air lets manufacturers refine their control strategies for extra driving range, performance and power efficiency,” said Automotive and Discrete Group Vice President of STMicroelectronics Luca Rodeschini.
