Toyota has decided to locate a new automotive battery plant at the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite in North Carolina’s Randolph County.
Toyota chose the site based on the availability of renewable energy, local support, on-site rail, and proximity to highways, four airports and two seaports. Together with lithium producer Toyota Tsusho, Toyota is planning to spend $1.29 billion on the plant as part of a $3.4-billion investment in US automotive battery manufacturing the company announced in October.
The company says it is “committed to using 100% renewable energy at this new facility to produce the batteries.” When production begins in 2025, Toyota says TBMNC’s four production lines will each make enough lithium-ion batteries for 200,000 electrified vehicles per year. In the future, Toyota anticipates TBMNC expanding to six production lines that would manufacture enough batteries for 1.2 million electrified vehicles per year.
